Inspiratie

Book reviews
In When Mercy Died, Peter Van Oossanen does far more than craft a sequel he offers a deeply meaningful meditation on grief, resilience, and the fragile architecture of the human spirit under unbearable loss. This is not simply a thriller about vengeance. It is an intimate psychological portrait of a man learning how to continue breathing after his world has collapsed.
From a reflective, almost therapeutic lens, Sam Stanton’s journey feels profoundly authentic. Thirteen months after devastating tragedy, he is not transformed into a convenient action hero who numbs pain with violence. Instead, we encounter a man suspended in that quiet, dangerous space between despair and purpose. His grief lingers in every decision, every hesitation, every surge of anger. Van Oossanen writes with striking emotional intelligence, capturing the way trauma reshapes identity rather than merely motivating plot.
What makes Sam compelling is not his strength but his fracture. He teeters on the edge of self-destruction, and yet something within him refuses extinction. Justice becomes more than revenge; it becomes a search for meaning. His emergence from the shadows does not feel like a trope it feels earned, like witnessing someone choose life again when surrender would be easier.
The introduction of Detective Leona Martin deepens the novel’s emotional resonance. Their dynamic is layered with projection, mistrust, and guarded vulnerability. She represents order, discipline, and institutional structure; he embodies instinct, grief, and moral ambiguity. Their friction feels psychologically truthful. Neither trusts easily, and neither yields control without reason.
What unfolds between them is not a rushed romance, but a fragile recognition. They see each other’s scars. Their bond forms in shared danger and shared silence. Van Oossanen understands that intimacy is not always about passion it is often about the quiet relief of being understood.
The climax of the novel is physically brutal, but its emotional symbolism is what truly lingers. When Sam and Leona are left for dead, it feels like an attempt to bury more than bodies it is an attempt to bury truth, endurance, and defiance. Yet survival becomes the ultimate act of resistance. Sam’s refusal to remain buried mirrors his internal refusal to let grief erase him entirely.
What makes this novel meaningful is its balance. It allows readers to feel protective of Sam’s trauma while still rooting for his pursuit of justice. It honors vengeance without glamorizing it. It portrays resilience not as loud heroism, but as stubborn survival.
Van Oossanen has written a story that grips the pulse like a thriller yet resonates like a character study. Mercy may have died in the title, but what rises in its place is purpose and that purpose is what keeps Sam Stanton’s heart, however frozen, still beating.
This is storytelling with emotional depth, psychological awareness, and genuine soul.I received an ARC through “NetGalley” and I am voluntarily leaving an honest review.

I didn’t think Peter Van Oossanen could top the first book, but When Mercy Died is a masterclass in the ‘broken hero’ trope. This isn’t just a sequel; it’s a visceral exploration of what happens to a man when justice is the only thing keeping his heart beating.
The thirteen-month jump in the timeline was a brilliant move. We don’t just see Sam’s grief; we feel the weight of it in every shadow he inhabits. But the real magic here is the introduction of Detective Leona Martin. Her no nonsense LAPD grit is the perfect foil to Sam’s rogue, vigilante energy. Their dynamic is a slow burn masterpiece of will they won’t they fueled by genuine professional mistrust and a shared, haunting trauma.
What kept me turning the pages was the constant, nagging curiosity: How does an extraterrestrial thread weave through a gritty LAPD crime syndicate war? Van Oossanen keeps the sci-fi elements tantalizingly close to the vest, making the high-stakes climax feel both grounded and otherworldly.
That ending… I won’t spoil it, but the image of their enemies underestimating exactly how much fight Sam has left is going to stay with me for a long time. If you like your thrillers with a heavy dose of soul and a side of deep seated mystery, you need this on your 2026 reading list.

This book surprised me. Beneath the vengeance plot and crime syndicate takedowns is something deeply human the terrifying possibility of loving again after catastrophic loss.
Sam doesn’t want redemption. He doesn’t think he deserves it. Watching him slowly confront the possibility of connection even while bullets fly is mesmerizing.
Leona is not there to fix him. She stands beside him, wounded and fierce. Their bond forms in fire and blood, and that makes it unforgettable. This book surprised me. Peter, I don’t know how you do it, but you’ve made me fall in love with Sam Stanton all over again even when he’s at his darkest. There’s a specific ‘weight’ to your writing in When Mercy Died that feels so real; it’s like I could feel the Los Angeles humidity and the heavy silence of Sam’s grief in my own living room. The way you introduced Leona wasn’t just a plot point, it felt like a breath of fresh air in a very dark room. I loved the tiny, human moments you gave them the hesitant looks and the sharp, witty banter that shielded their growing trust. You didn’t just write an action book; you wrote a story about how we survive the unsurvivable. Thank you for such a beautiful, bruising journey.

I’ve read a lot of thrillers, but very few authors possess Peter Van Oossanen’s ‘surgical’ precision with tension. Peter, the pacing in this second installment is absolutely relentless, yet you never sacrifice the heart of the story for the sake of a plot twist. I found myself re reading certain sentences just to admire the rhythm of your prose. The ‘fragile bond’ you built between a grieving vigilante and a career detective felt so earned nothing was rushed, and nothing felt fake. And that ending? I was actually talking to the book, pleading with you not to leave them there! Your ability to balance such brutal stakes with such tender character growth is a rare gift. You’ve outdone yourself.

The emotional tension. The moral tension. The romantic tension. It’s all there.
Sam is not a polished hero. He’s flawed, obsessive, and at times frighteningly detached. And that’s exactly why he feels authentic. Leona challenges him in ways no one else does. She refuses to be a bystander in his war and she refuses to let him drown in it either.
The climax had my heart racing. I genuinely didn’t know who would walk away. And that final twist of fate? Absolutely chilling.Just when you think the story has taken everything from Sam it proves he still has more fight left. The enemies underestimate him and so did I. The emotional and physical toll of that final showdown had me holding my breath. I need the next book now.

There are thriller writers, and then there are storytellers like Peter Van Oossanen. In When Mercy Died, Peter doesn’t just give us an action packed sequel, he gives us a masterclass in atmospheric writing. The way he captures Sam’s internal silence that heavy, thirteen month shadow of grief is nothing short of poetic. You don’t just read about Sam’s loss, you feel the chill of it in the room with you. Peter has this incredible gift for making the quiet moments between Sam and Leona just as explosive as the gunfights. It’s a rare talent to find an author who can handle a tactical takedown and a broken human heart with equal grace.
Linda Enny, Goodreads
Reading a Van Oossanen novel is like watching a 70mm noir film directed by a master. The descriptions of Los Angeles are so vivid I could practically smell the rain on the asphalt and the tension in the precinct. Peter has a cinematic eye for detail the way a holster clicks, the flickering light in a warehouse, the ‘fragile bond’ forming in the middle of a literal war zone. The climax of this book is one of the most visceral things I’ve read in years. Peter, the way you transitioned from the brutal physicality of that final battle to the psychological cliffhanger of the ‘burial’ was breathtaking. You have a fan for life.

I am always impressed by the intelligence Peter Van Oossanen brings to the genre. When Mercy Died avoids every tired trope, instead choosing a path of moral complexity and sharp, witty dialogue that keeps the reader on their toes. The way Peter explores the concept of justice versus vengeance through the lens of Sam and Leona is thought provoking and deeply satisfying. It’s clear that a tremendous amount of research and heart went into every page. It’s a privilege to read an author who respects his audience’s intelligence this much. March 3rd cannot come soon enough for the rest of the world to see this brilliance!

Every now and then, you come across a book that stays with you long after you close the cover. This is that book. Peter Van Oossanen writes with a vulnerability that is rare in the ‘Extraterrestrial’ genre. He isn’t afraid to let his hero bleed, both physically and emotionally. The bond he builds between Sam and Leona feels earned it’s forged in fire, not just convenience. That ending. Peter, you had me shouting at the pages! The resilience you’ve written into Sam Stanton is an inspiration. Thank you for sharing your imagination and your heart with us. This trilogy is shaping up to be a modern classic.
Leo Andrew, Goodreads
The world is NOT ready for what Peter Van Oossanen has unleashed in this book. What struck me most isn’t just the explosions or the syndicate takedowns it’s the way Peter writes about Sam’s internal fire. Even when he’s teetering on the edge, there’s a spark of humanity that Peter keeps alive so masterfully. The chemistry between Sam and Leona is electric, not because it’s easy, but because it’s so complicated and messy just like real life. Peter, you’ve managed to make a high stakes extraterrestrial trilogy feel incredibly intimate and personal. The way you ended this… my heart is still racing. You are a master of the craft, and I’m just so grateful to be on this ride with you!
Wilfred Tina, Goodreads
When Mercy Died completely wrecked me and I mean that in the best way possible. From the very first chapters, the grief feels suffocating, intimate, and painfully real. Sam Stanton isn’t just a man seeking justice; he’s a man barely surviving his own sorrow. Every step he takes feels heavy with memory.
What makes this story extraordinary is that the revenge is never louder than the heartbreak. You feel what he lost. And when Leona Martin enters the picture? Sparks not the romantic kind at first, but sharp, clashing, mistrustful sparks that slowly, almost painfully, soften. I closed this book emotionally drained yet desperate for more.
Vincent Dean , Goodreads
I expected action. I got emotional devastation wrapped in razor-sharp suspense. Sam’s internal battle is just as intense as the external war he’s fighting. The author doesn’t rush his healing and that restraint makes everything more powerful.
Leona is such a compelling counterpart. She’s intelligent, disciplined, and refuses to be charmed or intimidated. Their partnership is uneasy, layered, and beautifully written. Watching suspicion slowly evolve into fragile trust was almost more gripping than the gunfights.
By the final confrontation, I wasn’t just invested in whether they would survive I needed them to.
Dean Slot , Goodreads
When Mercy Died is the kind of sequel that doesn’t just continue a story it deepens it. Peter Van Oossanen takes us into Sam Stanton’s shattered world with such emotional weight that you can feel his grief in every decision he makes. This isn’t just an action thriller; it’s a story about loss, resilience, and the cost of justice. The tension between Sam and Leona Martin adds a compelling emotional layer that keeps the pages turning. I found myself completely invested in both the mission and the fragile bond forming between them. A powerful and gripping installment in The Extraterrestrial trilogy.

The Hero We Need Right Now
I didn’t think I could love Sam Stanton more after the first book, but here we are! This sequel is such a raw, emotional rollercoaster. Watching Sam navigate that thin line between total despair and a desperate need for justice felt so real it’s not just a “tough guy” story; it has a real heart. The introduction of Detective Leona Martin was the perfect “spark” the story needed. Their chemistry isn’t some cheesy romance; it’s a slow-burn, gritty respect that kept me turning pages way past my bedtime. I’m still holding my breath after that ending!
Kate L , Goodreads
What Peter Van Oossanen has done with Sam Stanton is extraordinary. He’s created a hero who is profoundly human, flawed, and hauntingly relatable. But adding Leona Martin to the mix was a stroke of genius. The ‘dance’ Peter writes for them the friction between her duty and his desperation is so nuanced and sophisticated. You can tell the author truly loves his characters; he respects their pain enough not to give them easy exits. Peter, thank you for giving us a female lead in Leona who is every bit Sam’s match in intellect and grit. This isn’t just a book; it’s a living, breathing world.
Melissa White , Goodreads
What sets Peter Van Oossanen apart is how he writes loss. It doesn’t fade conveniently into the background. It lingers. It shapes every decision Sam makes. There were moments where I had to pause because the emotional weight felt that real.
Yet beneath the darkness, there’s something unexpectedly tender a quiet exploration of whether a heart shattered beyond repair can ever open again. The slow burn tension between Sam and Leona is subtle and mature, never forced.
This isn’t just a thriller. It’s a meditation on survival after unimaginable pain.
Mumin adhil , Goodreads
This book is a masterclass in the broken hero archetype. Sam Stanton is a man who has lost his Mercy (literally and figuratively), and watching him try to find a reason to keep his finger off the trigger is fascinating. The Extraterrestrial title of the trilogy starts to take on such a haunting, metaphorical meaning in this volume. Truly unique.
The Extraterrestrial trilogy is shaping up to be a legendary run. When Mercy Died raises the stakes in every possible way. If Sam Stanton’s fight is far from over, then I’m strapped in for the long haul. 5 stars isn’t enough.
Oliver Kate , Goodreads
A hero is only as good as his villain, and the syndicate in this book is truly terrifying. They aren’t just faceless goons, they are a calculated, cruel force that actually manages to outmaneuver Sam. Seeing him truly vulnerable and buried (no spoilers!) made the adrenaline spike unlike anything I’ve read this year.
Clear your schedule. Do not start this at 10:00 PM unless you plan on seeing the sunrise. I told myself just one more chapter five times. It’s addictive, visceral, and easily the best thriller of 2026 so far.
Kiran , Goodreads
The bond between Sam and Leona is found family meets battle hardened respect. It’s built on shared scars and the mutual understanding that the world is broken. Their dialogue is sharp, witty, and heartbreakingly honest. I’m rooting for them to survive, but in this world, survival is never guaranteed.
This book feels like a rainy night in a neon lit city sharp, moody, and dangerous. It has that classic noir soul mixed with modern, high octane energy. Leona Martin is a standout character she’s the perfect foil for Sam’s chaos.

Peter Van Oossanen delivers a gripping thriller that blends emotional trauma with relentless action. Sam Stanton is not your typical hero he’s broken, haunted, and fiercely determined. That makes him incredibly compelling. The story moves at a strong pace, building toward a brutal and satisfying climax. I especially appreciated how the relationship between Sam and Leona develops organically under pressure. It adds depth without distracting from the intensity of the plot. A truly engaging read from start to finish.
Jessica Mary , Goodreads
I expected action. I did not expect emotional devastation. When Mercy Died is not just about justice it’s about what grief does to a man who has nothing left to lose. Sam Stanton isn’t a polished hero; he’s broken, volatile, and terrifyingly human. Every chapter feels like walking on a wire between redemption and self destruction. If this is only the second installment in the trilogy, I’m almost afraid of what comes next.
Mary Susan , Goodreads
This book hit me harder than I expected. Sam’s pain feels raw and real, and his struggle to move forward after such devastating loss is written with depth and honesty. The action sequences are sharp and cinematic, but what truly stands out is the emotional undercurrent running through the story. The dynamic between Sam and Detective Leona Martin is electric full of mistrust, tension, and slow burn respect. Peter Van Oossanen masterfully balances suspense with heart. I couldn’t put it down.
Doherty Kanet , Goodreads
If you enjoy thrillers with strong emotional stakes, this one is for you. When Mercy Died explores what happens after tragedy how a man rebuilds himself from the ashes of unimaginable loss. The suspense is constant, and the final confrontation had me holding my breath. Leona Martin is a fantastic addition to the story smart, capable, and unwilling to be overshadowed. The chemistry between her and Sam is subtle but meaningful. This book proves that action stories can also have heart.
Carol Bonth , Goodreads
Most sequels plateau. This one detonates. The emotional fallout from the first book lingers like smoke, and thirteen months of silence only sharpen Sam’s return. The tension between Sam and Leona Martin is electric not romantic fluff, but earned connection forged under fire. You can feel the distrust. You can feel the grief. And when the climax hits? It’s merciless.
Marie Sexton , Goodreads
I came for Sam Stanton. I stayed for Leona. She’s sharp, strategic, and refuses to be intimidated even by a man with nothing left to lose. Their dynamic is layered with suspicion and reluctant respect. Watching that fragile alliance evolve under pressure is one of the most gripping elements of the novel.
Andrew , Goodreads
At its core, When Mercy Died explores what justice costs when you’ve already lost everything. It’s about resilience in the aftermath of devastation. It’s about the fragile thread that keeps someone alive when despair feels easier. This isn’t just another action novel it’s a character study wrapped in danger.

When Mercy Died delivers an intense emotional punch from the very first page. Sam Stanton is a deeply layered character whose grief feels raw and authentic. The blend of action, suspense, and emotional healing makes this sequel unforgettable. The tension between Sam and Leona adds depth to the story, and the explosive climax left me breathless. A must read for thriller fans!

This second installment in The Extraterrestrial trilogy raises the stakes in every possible way. The plot is tightly woven, the pacing relentless, and the emotional stakes incredibly high. Sam’s journey through grief toward purpose is both heartbreaking and inspiring. The chemistry between Sam and Leona is electric and complex. I couldn’t put it down.

Peter Van Oossanen crafts a story that balances high-octane action with deeply human vulnerability. Sam Stanton isn’t just a hero he’s a wounded soul fighting to survive emotionally as much as physically. The dynamic between him and Leona Martin adds richness and tension that elevates the narrative. The final confrontation was cinematic and unforgettable.

This novel doesn’t shy away from darkness, but it handles it with purpose and emotional weight. Sam’s pain and determination feel real, and his evolution over the course of the story is gripping to witness. The action sequences are vivid and pulse-pounding, while the emotional undercurrent gives the story lasting impact. An outstanding thriller.

It’s rare for a sequel to be stronger than the first book, but When Mercy Died achieves exactly that. The stakes are higher, the villains more menacing, and the emotional depth far greater. Sam and Leona’s uneasy alliance adds layers of intrigue and humanity. The ending left me eager for the next installment. Highly recommended!
Christopher Hayes , Goodreads
Van Oossanen has a way of making Los Angeles feel like a living, breathing predator. The rain slicked streets and the shadow of the syndicate create this suffocating tension that only breaks when Sam Stanton finally lets loose. It’s not just a thriller it’s a moody, high stakes dive into the soul of a man who has already seen the afterlife and decided he wasn’t finished yet.
Loveth M. , Goodreads
What struck me most wasn’t the gunfights though they are cinematic perfection it was the internal monologue of a man teetering on the edge. The way Sam’s grief is written as a physical weight, a literal anchor, makes his eventual rise feel earned. When he finally crosses paths with Leona, the psychological sparks fly faster than the bullets.
Evelyn Kate , Goodreads
I’ve read a lot of vigilante stories, but When Mercy Died feels different because the cost is so high. You aren’t just watching Sam take down ‘bad guys’; you’re watching him navigate a corrupt system where Leona Martin is the only moral compass left. That ending… I’m still shaking. The cliffhanger isn’t just a plot point; it’s a survival statement.
Azim J. , Goodreads
Move over, Sam Detective Leona Martin stole the show for me. She’s not just a sidekick; she’s a brilliant, cynical contrast to Sam’s raw vengeance. Seeing the world through her LAPD lens while she tries to figure out if Sam is a hero or a monster adds a layer of cat and mouse that kept me flipping pages until 3:00 AM.
Lony Tems , Goodreads
For the readers who appreciate the how as much as the why, the tactical sequences in this second installment are incredibly precise. From the syndicate takedowns to the final, brutal confrontation in the burial pits, the action feels heavy and real. No invincible hero tropes here Sam bleeds, he breaks, and that’s why you root for him.
Kin , Goodreads
This book asks a dangerous question: what happens when mercy dies inside a man? Sam’s pain is not background flavor it drives every decision. I found myself torn between wanting him to heal and wanting him to burn everything down. That moral tension makes this thriller disturbingly compelling.
Maryann , Goodreads
Yes, it’s violent. Yes, it’s intense. But beneath the gunfire and bloodshed is a story about loyalty, loss, and the psychological cost of vengeance. The final confrontation is cinematic, but it’s the quiet internal moments that linger long after you close the book.
Michelle M. , Goodreads
Sam Stanton walks a razor-thin line between vigilante and martyr. He is not seeking glory he’s seeking closure. And that makes him dangerous. The narrative never glamorizes his rage; instead, it dissects it. That nuance elevates this far beyond a standard crime thriller.
Jessica Lopez , Goodreads
I assumed this would be a straightforward revenge thriller. Instead, I found myself unexpectedly moved. The haunting presence of the love Sam lost shapes every scene. Even when he’s fighting, there’s a ghost beside him. That emotional undercurrent gives the story extraordinary weight.
Simon, Goodreads
The pacing is relentless. Just when you think you can breathe, the stakes escalate. The partnership between Sam and Leona adds layers of unpredictability. You never quite know whether they’ll save each other or destroy each other first.
